INVERCARGILL. 19 NOVEMBER 2024.

We’re up by 8:30 which is a good job because the cleaner tries to come in our room a short time later. We pick up supplies from a supermarket called New World, fill up with petrol then head for the scenic route south to Invercargill. We eat our breakfast overlooking the sea at Molyneux Bay

We walk down to the lighthouse at Nugget Bay then drive to the waterfalls at Purakaunui Falls. The only disappointment is at Curio Bay. The walks there are closed off without explanation so we can’t experience the petrified forest and the penguin walk. Finally, we stop for coffee at the Lost Gypsy Gallery.

Our accommodation is at a holiday park. We’ve booked a room without a bathroom but the amenities block is a long walk from our chalet so we pay to upgrade. A wise choice because we’re here for two days.

We decide to cook our own dinner. Woolworths is about 2k away so we buy food there. But, the assistant informs us that supermarkets don’t sell alcohol in Southland. A drive through bottle shop is two blocks down. Now, that’s a novelty for us.
