JURMALA.
We've got used to being just too early or just too late for events in the areas that we visit. However, today we set a very undesirable record.
Rosie has read that there are blue cows on the coast north west of Riga. The legend goes that a mermaid brought them out of the sea. The guide book tells us that, at least, the cows exist. So, we drive 70 miles to the town of Mersrags. The girl in the information centre tells us that died out in 2005. There is one herd 100 km away but we would to make an appointment. Thus, 14 years' too late.
She tells us that there us a nature reserve nearby so we call in there on the way back. Wild horses and cows are offered along with 186 species of birds. The weather is bitterly cold so the horses have gone into hiding. We're left with highland cattle and a few birds we recognise from home. Still, Rosie gets to use the grown-ups swing.

Our site for the night is in the Jurmala region. There is a daily toll of 2 euro to enter the town. The area is frequented by oil rich Russians so the real estate is very expensive. The site is closed until the middle of May. We park up and find a motel offering camping. However, he wants 33 euro for the night. Must have mistaken us for Russians. No wonder his grounds were empty. Go for a walk along the strip to discuss our options.

At least it is a very nice beach.
We passed a site on the way into the town so plump for that. Satnav throws one of her wobbles and takes us down some unfinished roads but we eventually find it. Reception is closed but there are a few vans on the site. The manager comes running after us, he and Rosie disappear for an age. It transpires that she has negotiated a 10% discount. At least, today's showers have a door on them. I'm not sure about the lodges, though.
