GDANSK.

The sun is shining and the harbour is still picturesque as we enjoy breakfast. A walk to the post office and we're on our way. Yesterday, Rosie had noticed a garden ornament centre so we stop on route to Gdansk in case we can buy some. Unfortunately they are too big to fit in the van.

The site is very pleasant, the receptionist wants to practise his English on us.

The tram into the city is about 300 metres from the site. There is no ticket machine but the locals tell us we can pay on the tram. You can but you need to get on at the front. We didn't and spent 15 stops hoping that the inspectors didn't board.

Alight at the old town. Fabulous streets full of colourful buildings.

Wander around the town enjoying the atmosphere. Plenty to look at including the old and the new.

Coffee is taken at a cafe in the sunshine before we go our separate ways. A real life gnome walks past. He's about 5 feet tall, has a large pot belly and turned up toes in his shoes. Maybe, Gdansk is trying to out do Wroclaw!

Rosie goes souvenir hunting in the new town whilst I explore the old town. Intrigued by the monument to the defenders of the post office. It turns out that the post office was attacked by the Germans on 1 September 1939. Plenty of fresh wreaths as the anniversary was only last Saturday.

Famous sons of the town include Fahrenheit who invented the thermometer and of course had the temperature scale named after him. Lech Walenska was the shop steward who led the shipworkers revolt which eventually led to fall of the communist rule.

Randomly settle on a restaurant because we can see through the window that the kitchen is clean. A great choice, Rosie has pork and I have chicken. The dessert is a chocolate pancake stuffed with a raspberry sauce. One serving fills both if us.

Strange on the tram home, a guy seems to want to fight a couple of asian guys as they are about to get off the tram.. Fortunately, they ignore him and nothing happens. Everyone leaving the tram at our stop seem to be stayimg at our site. A group of French have taken over half the campsite.
